Principal's Message

Welcome Back HHS School Family

As we look toward the fall, it is important to be transparent: this will be a year of significant change. Much of what we have known previously at HHS is evolving in preparation for new opportunities. This year brings change not only in the people who make up our building, but also change in the appearance of our building, and change in what we have historically offered in this building. Indeed, this is a year of change.

When we met last week as a staff, we discussed the idea that if we do not change, we do not grow. Growth is something we will pursue together this year - growing in our understanding of what these changes will bring, strengthening the relationships within our building and community, and expanding our ability to support students both in the classroom and through extracurricular activities. This change will bring forth tremendous growth.

I want to welcome back our staff and students after a well-deserved summer break. In conversations with staff, it is clear that we are all eager to welcome students back into the classroom as they are the reason we entered this profession.

I also want to welcome back Mrs. Janessa Roach and Ms. Christie Adair as they have both returned from maternity leave. I would like to extend a big HHS welcome to Ms. Stephanie Lewis who is coming this year to work with Mrs. Long to support some of our youngest Royals in Grade 1.  I would like to extend an earnest welcome to Ms. Ally Hutchings who will be taking on the Classroom Complexity teaching position. This position has been created to support students’ individual academic and social needs, as well as to support student growth in literacy and numeracy at HHS. Finally, I would like to extend a welcome back to Mr. Mason Blais who is taking on our PAA position this year, as well as some middle-years Phys Ed, and middle-years Humanities and Math.  If you see these familiar faces around the school, please extend a warm welcome as they return to our school family.  If you see some unfamiliar faces, don’t hesitate to reach out a hand and introduce yourself. One of the best parts of our school is the community that supports us. We can all do better when we are working together.

Our fall is going to be a full one. New routines, new classes, new faces, and a whole lot of activity. Our fall sports program will open up with Senior Golf, Cross Country (Grades 3-12), as well as Volleyball for both Junior and Senior High.  Special thank you to the adults who are volunteering their time to ensure our students have athletic opportunities. As we finalize our coaches for these activities we will have more thank yous to follow.

Our School Community Council is scheduled to meet this fall. If you are passionate about HHS, and committed to working collaboratively with the school, students, and larger community, please reach out to Heidi Jamieson, or any current SCC member.  The SCC is a vital organization within our school community; it not only supports staff and students in their daily activities but also fosters community connections, supports students’ post-secondary aspirations, and awards excellence within our school.  If you are a community minded and passionate volunteer, the SCC wants your energy and enthusiasm as they come together to create plans for the 2025-2026 school year.

Change.  Abraham Maslow said, “In any given moment we have two options; to step forward into growth, or step back into safety.” I look forward to stepping forward into growth alongside an incredible staff, the best students, and the most incredible community. As we step forward into growth, we know we have the history, culture, and needs of our community in mind. We want to build on this rich history and grow in a positive way. With this knowledge, we can move forward in a positive direction, together.

Have a WONDERFUL September, and I look forward to sharing this exciting school year with you.
